What to gift a travel lover

If someone you know loves traveling and you’re wondering what to get them for their birthday read on for some ideas! It was my birthday recently. So this inspired my post on what to gift a travel lover.

These are just some ideas to get you started. Prices vary so hopefully you can find some inspiration no-matter your budget.

So…. what to gift a travel lover

Country book (Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, Rick Steves, etc.)

If the person your getting a gift for has a trip planned or if they have a destination they dream of, consider getting them a travel book on that country/destination. Some good, reputable books that you can find great travel information are Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, and Rick Steves. All of these will have great, trustworthy information on the destination they’re traveling to.

Sometimes a physical book is so inspiring. If they’re anything like me, they probably love a Saturday morning reading and dreaming about their next destination, highlighting the places they want to visit, and sipping on a cup of coffee.

My most recent gift which I’m using to prepare for our Italy honeymoon (check out our Italy honeymoon itinerary)!

Speaking of coffee….

Made by Fressko travel mug

Made by Fressko is now my favorite travel coffee mug! It’s the perfect size (12 oz), so it’s not too bulky and doesn’t take up too much space. It’s easy to throw in your travel purse or bag.

AND if this is too big for you they have an even smaller option. This is an even better size for traveling! Also, it is sooooo cute!

We have a 12 oz in Frost and Sage. I also LOVE the Tuscan color (but I shouldn’t buy anymore 😉 ). We also have an 8 oz in Khaki. We use them all!

PLUS, something that set’s Made by Fressko apart from other travel mugs is that you can purchase “sleeves” for your travel mug. Consider this helpful when you’re in the airport trying to pull out your passport and your phone/boarding pass while still managing your delicious cup of coffee! With the sleeve, you just need a finger to hold on to that coffee cup.

Travel skin-care

Does your friend have a favorite skin-care regimen or brand? Consider getting them some really good travel-size skin care products they love.

If they don’t have a favorite, I have a recommendation! OSEA Malibu.

A friend recommended OSEA Malibu to me and I’m so in-love (thank you Kate!). I use one of their cleansers (Ocean Cleanser), under-eye serum (Ocean Eyes Eye Serum), and moisturizer (Atmosphere Protection Cream).

They have great “travel starter sets” you can purchase.

AND these travel starter sets include a vegan leather travel bag. This on it’s own is enough to purchase a travel starter set for your loved-one. This is now my primary toiletry travel bag. You can wipe off the inside and outside if anything spills, it’s a good size (not too big or too small), and it looks nice!

One reason I love OSEA Malibu is that all of their products come in glass containers that can be recycled or re-used (goodbye plastic!). Secondly, OSEA uses naturally sourced seaweed as the base of their products providing natural vitamins for the skin. They pride themselves on “respect for the natural world.”

Coffee table book (Lonely Planet book of every country)

If your loved one has a destination in mind consider buying them a beautiful coffee-table book with photographs from that country/destination.

If they’re just a travel-lover with so many destinations in mind, consider buying a coffee-table book of many places.

When I was 18 and itching to travel the world, my parents got me one of my favorite gifts ever: The Lonely Planet “Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World.” I still have this book. It’s a little worn now (from all of my bookmarks and usage), but I still love it! Sometimes I just pull it out to look at the pictures of that country I am dreaming about.

Here’s an updated version on Amazon. Oh, and go hardcover! It’s more sturdy and special.

Luggage tags

For a more affordable gift for your travel lover friend you could get them one or two luggage tags. Consider doing this through Etsy.

You can support a local person making beautiful luggage tags personalized to fit the personality of your friend or family member.

Monos carry-on suitcase

This is one of the more expensive items on the list. But if you’re looking for a splurge item to get your friend, spouse, child, parent, etc. add this to your list! I love my Monos carry-on suitcase. They have variations of the traditional carry-on (Carry-On Plus and Carry-On Pro). I have the standard “Carry-On” in Desert Taupe and I LOVE it!

I am a big believer in traveling with a carry-on only. It simplifies the travel experience, the packing experience, and any of your concerns of lost luggage. There are many great carry-on luggage out there. I looked into a few, but I was ready to spend a little money on something that would last.

I can’t recommend the Monos Carry-on suitcase enough!

Beis Convertible Mini-Weekender bag

I came across Beis a few months ago and I could not be happier with the Beis Convertible Mini-Weekender bag (in beige). You can read my post on how to travel with just a personal item. We had to do that to Colombia recently and it worked out pretty well!

The Beis Convertible Mini-Weekender bag is great for many reasons. It’s the perfect size for a personal item while flying on an airplane. The best part is that the bottom compartment can zip off completely. It’s a great compartment for a pair of shoes, but you can also take it off completely if you want something smaller.

This is also more of a splurge item. But if you’re okay spending a little money on a thoughtful gift that they could use for a long time, consider gifting this!

Kindle

If your friend is a book-reader, a Kindle can be so helpful! I think we can all relate to loving a physical book. But travel can mean wanting to pack more minimally. A kindle can be perfect for your 2 week vacation traveling through Japan or your week laying on the beach in Belize.

Novel

If they have a favorite destination in mind, consider finding a novel based in the country they’ll be traveling to.

My book of the month #2 was Eternal by Lisa Scottoline. It takes place in Italy during WWII. And my inspiration for choosing it was because of our upcoming trip to Italy.

A novel or even a non-fiction book based in the destination they’re dreaming about can be a fun way to spend time leading up to their trip.

Good walking shoes

It might be tough if you don’t know their style, but a pair of good (and stylish) walking shoes can be such a worthwhile gift! I have a favorite pair of Keens that I wear wherever I travel (whether it’s hot climate or in the 40’s).

I actually think they discontinued the shoe I got, but this one is really similar. I wanted something stylish but also comfortable and sturdy to walk miles in every day. Keen is a great brand that is built for comfort and to last.

But there are plenty of other brands that are also built that way.

Linen pants

Linen pants are in style right now. But they are also a timeless piece of travel apparel to have. Whether you’re traveling in Paris or in South Africa, Linen pants can breath in hot weather and can look nice with a classy tank-top and necklace. Wear on a safari or touring around Florence with a pair of espadrilles.

I recently found a good affordable pair at Gap (with a long option!). But you can find a good pair anywhere!

Gift cards

Gift cards are always a good option! Travel can get expensive. Sometimes it helps to have that extra financial boost. Consider an Airbnb gift card, a gift card for an airline (think Delta or United), or a gift card for a specific hotel.

This can go a long way to make that dream trip possible!

Journal

Not everyone is a journal-er. But if your friend or family member likes to take notes, make itineraries, or want’s to keep track of all their memories from their trip a notebook or a journal can be a great gift!

Consider Papyrus as an example!

Good instant coffee

This is a tiny gift, but if you want to build a travel gift set or a travel box for your friend, you could include this! Depending on where they’re traveling to coffee may or may not be reliable. Maybe that airplane coffee isn’t up to par for their coffee standards. Or maybe brewed coffee just isn’t as common where they’re traveling to. Starbuck’s instant coffee can be the best treat!

I keep these on hand for when we go camping or when we stay at a hotel that I know won’t have strong coffee. I’ve come to the conclusion that I am a bit of a coffee-snob…. :/

Airpods

I am not an Apple-product lover. My fiance is on the life-long mission to “convert” me. With that said, Airpods are some of the best things invented! If your friend or family member likes listening to music or podcasts, or they want to make sure they can talk on the phone with you while they’re walking through the airport, Airpods can be a game-changer!

Forget about the cords plugged into your phone. Be able to tap your Airpods to pause the music while you’re scanning your boarding pass.

If they don’t have these already, consider gifting them to your travel lover!

I hope this list of what to gift a travel lover was helpful for you. Whether it’s a birthday, Christmas, Valentines Day, or any other holiday you celebrate, this list might inspire you to find something meaningful for that loved one.
