Unique, affordable honeymoon destinations for anyone

Unique, affordable honeymoon destinations for anyone

We’re in the process of trying to decide where to go and what to do for our honeymoon next year.  So I thought I would share a list of unique, affordable honeymoon destinations for anyone!

The places listed are a combination of places we/I have been and places we would like to visit.   It was hard to keep the list small!

My fiancé and I are not pure adventure enthusiasts nor days-on-the-beach kind of people.  But we still want a little of everything!  We want a place we can walk around the historic old town, revel at the natural beauty, go on a hike, hang out on the beach one day, and find delicious food.  It’s a balance!

So here are the countries or places that I think would make a great honeymoon destination!

(Note: I’m not pretending I know everything about all of these countries. This is an inspiration post. These are places I would love to visit for a romantic getaway. Or these are places I have visited and can confidently say are ROMANTIC!)

Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa — unique honeymoon destination

I am more of the traveler of the two of us (fiancé and me), but one place we both really get excited about visiting one day is Japan (and South Korea).  Rather than putting Japan as a whole country on this list, I decided to put Okinawa specifically.  If we do go to Japan, this will be a priority! Although it’s far from the rest of the country, Okinawa seems to offer so much!

Another reason to visit Okinawa: If you haven’t read the Blue Zones by Dan Buettner I highly recommend it! I’d like to write a post on the Blue Zones sometime. Okinawa has some of the healthiest people in the world, and more specifically – some of the highest rates of those living over 100 years old (centenarians).

I would love to immerse ourselves on this island for a few days!

Namibia

Namibia — Unique, affordable honeymoon destination

I have traveled all over southern Africa (See my southern Africa 2 week itinerary here.). Namibia is one country I haven’t been.  When I was living in southern Africa, I heard great things about Namibia!

I’m sure many of you know, but Namibia is well known for it’s desert and sand dunes.  It’s also great proximity to the rest of southern Africa.  It’s close to Chobe National Park in Botswana (home to some of the greatest elephant populations in the world), just north of Cape Town, and right on the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s well known for great stargazing, ancient cave paintings, and many dead 1000-year-old Acacia trees.

There’s also an area in Namibia that looks like the moon — The Moon Landscapes of Namibia! Check it out.

The We Kebi Safari Lodge looks so unique and romantic!

Namibia would be a great unique affordable honeymoon destination for anyone!

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como, Italy — Unique honeymoon destination

This might be a more “obvious” choice for many people. But it’s often times left off of “Euro tours” because of its location. Lake Como is in the northern part of Italy, not far from Milan.  We had actually hoped to make this part of our Croatia trip (see our Croatia trip here).   But during COVID, we were having a much more difficult time getting approved into Italy.

Lake Como is on my list to visit very soon.  It looks so beautiful! And here’s a fun fact for you.  We live in the Twin Cities, and we have a Lake Como in Saint Paul, MN! Sometimes I walk around it, imagining I’m walking around the Italian version.

Lake Como is known for it’s natural beauty, northern Italian culture, and for some luxury.  Lake Como would be a bit of a more expensive trip, but if you made a honeymoon fund, why not spend it on something more luxurious!

Look at Hotel Belvedere or Villa Lario Lake Como.  What a romantic stay!

Mauritius

Mauritius — unique, affordable honeymoon destination

I hadn’t heard of Mauritius until I was living in southern Africa.  But it quickly became a common topic of discussion.  It was a popular destination to travel to from the southern part of the continent.  Everyone I know that has been there, had wonderful things to say about it.

An island off of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a great affordable romantic destination.  Mauritius is known for it’s beaches but so much more.  There are gorges, the “7 Coloured Earth” – an area of sand dunes that have an appearance of being really colorful, great hiking and views, waterfalls, and all sorts of water activities.

The Lux Le Morne Resort looks beautiful!

Goa, India

Goa, India — Unique, affordable honeymoon destination

Speaking of the Indian Ocean, if you haven’t been to Goa, India, you must visit! It’s SUCH a beautiful place.  Goa is the only state in India that was colonized by the Portuguese (and subsequently de-colonized after the rest of India).  Apart from this controversial past, Goa is characterized by Portuguese architecture, culture, and even language.

When I was living in India, my friend and I took the train to Goa and stayed there for a week vacation.  We stayed in beach huts right on the water.  Our accommodation had an outdoor restaurant attached that we could eat each meal right on the beach. This was all at extremely affordable prices.  This would be an ideal, unique, and affordable honeymoon destination for anyone.

Oh Goa…. Sigh… can I go back?!

Azores

Azores — Unique honeymoon destination

Speaking of Portuguese connection, the Azores are known as the Hawaii of Europe. I actually didn’t know that until recently.  The Azores have been on my radar for a while. One of my childhood friends had traveled there with his dad – who was doing some sort of volcanic and nature research.

The Azores are a string of islands in the Atlantic Ocean.  They’re a part of Portugal.  These islands look like some of the most beautiful places in the world.  Apparently, the weather can be really finicky (think fog and rain), but on a clear day the images look spectacular.

Northern Finland

Finland — unique honeymoon destination

One thing that could be so romantic about being in Northern Finland (and northern Norway) are the Northern Lights.  It is one of my goals to see the Northern Lights (even clearer than from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan).

Check out the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort where you can stay in a clear igloo structure. You get to see the Northern Lights while you lay bed! This would be super romantic!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Croatia — Unique, affordable honeymoon destination

While we’re in Europe….. Croatia!! (Again…. here’s the link to our Croatia trip).  Croatia is beautiful! Maybe I’m biased because we did get engaged in Dubrovnik, but it was such a romantic place.  There’s so much history.  I could get lost in the old town for hours. I loved finding cute little cafes to sit and enjoy espresso while everyone else goes about their day. It’s one of our favorite things to do!

An experience we didn’t really expect that was a highlight was that we found a family-owned winery south of Dubrovnik.  There isn’t much south of Dubrovnik but the border crossing to Montenegro.  This drive was even further up the mountains with some of the most phenomenal views.  The little winery was so quant and romantic! Not to mention we got a very large “tasting” of many different types of wines and liqueurs! The cutest thing about it, was that they host weddings! They host weddings of up to 50 people.  So that was really fun to romanticize about.

I will also mention (in case you didn’t already read the post) that we got engaged in Croatia. I can say from personal experience that it was such a romantic destination. I would highly recommend Croatia for a honeymoon!

Eswatini

Eswatini — unique and affordable honeymoon destination

This country is such a gem. If you haven’t already, check out my post on what makes the Kingdom of Eswatini so special. I may be biased because I lived there for 2 years, but there is truly so much to do there. People coming in with the tourist perspective raved about it! And it’s not just a beautiful place, but I would argue that it’s a romantic place. There are plenty of opportunities for solitude and romance, while also exploring nature and getting to know the friendly people.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Zanzibar — unique, affordable honeymoon destination for anyone

Continuing north on the continent of Africa, Zanzibar in Tanzania is known as a romantic getaway in this part of the world. Zanzibar is known for its proximity to the ocean and it’s islands. It also has museums, nature preserves, and proximity to safaris.

When most people think honeymoons they think Caribbean beaches, sipping cocktails, and relaxing without much to do.

This region of the world is overlooked for many traveling opportunities, but especially for romantic, honeymoon destinations.

Philippines

Philippines — unique, affordable honeymoon destination for anyone

I could have been more specific than just this large country with numerous islands. But I don’t want to claim to know more than I do. I’ve never been to the Philippines, but I would LOVE to go. I have heard such wonderful things about this country. The islands look spectacular.

It seems like a great place to go if you’re looking for natural beauty, relaxing on the seaside, but also for adventures.

Look at these pictures of Camiguin Island!

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena — unique, affordable honeymoon destination for anyone

Apparently Cartagena was the inspiration for the movie Encanto. We are lucky enough to have a trip planned to Cartagena in December for a friends wedding. I can’t wait to write a post on it! I also plan to write a post on the planning for this destination.

Cartagena is known for its old town, referred to as the “walled city.” The walled city looks so colorful and idyllic. There are numerous boutique hotels at affordable prices, islands to visit, and great coffee. Doesn’t this sound like the perfect honeymoon??!

Milos and Santorini, Greece

Santorini — unique honeymoon destinations for anyone

Maybe everyone thinks of Greece when thinking of romance and their honeymoon. I still have it on this list because it is a dream of mine to visit. While I have been all over Europe (15+ countries!), I haven’t been to Greece.

For me, this is THE place. I think you all know what I mean by THE place. It’s the place that I could watch endless YouTube videos on. It’s the place that I’ve always wanted to visit, but I keep putting off waiting for the perfect moment. Maybe that will be our honeymoon.

My dream trip to Greece would include a brief stay in Athens (1 or 2 nights). Then we would go to two islands. When I travel, I don’t like to be hopping from one place to the next. Yet, the islands all have different charm from one another. 2 islands would be perfect.

Everyone has heard of Santorini. Although it can be quite touristy, ideally we would travel here during the “off season”.

Milos isn’t as well known, but from what I’ve heard recently its a great place to relax without as many tourists.

Awwwww, now its back to dreaming…..

Southern Europe road trip along the Mediterranean

Mediterranean — unique honeymoon destinations for anyone

Finally, on the list I’ve included — not so much a country — as a region. I would love to travel by car along the Mediterranean Sea. I’ve done a similar trip when I was 18 with a huge group of 18 year olds. But I would love to do this more intentionally as a honeymoon.

Start in Spain and drive along the coast, up through southern France, through Monaco, and then into Italy.

You could go as far south in Italy as you want! Depending on how long you have.

I just know that this is a beautiful part of the world!

I hope that you found some inspiration in these unique honeymoon destinations for anyone.
