Romantic destinations in South Africa

South Africa is the perfect destination for your honeymoon, anniversary, a child-free vacation, or any couples’ travel! If you need more convincing to book travel here, read my 5 recommendations for romantic destinations in South Africa.

South Africa is close to my heart. I lived in Southern Africa for 2 years and it consistently comes up as one of my favorite countries I’ve been. Those 2 years included numerous khumbi rides from Eswatini to Joburg or Durban, flights to and from Cape Town, car transfers to Kruger National Park, and a family 5-country road-trip.

Cape Town

Probably one of the most popular destinations to visit in South Africa is Cape Town. This is for a great reason. Cape Town is a MUST when visiting this country. It’s one of the most romantic destinations in South Africa.

In Cape Town, you can cuddle-up after a long hike (or a Cableway drive 😉 ) and soak in the views on top of Table Mountain, take romantic drives along the Atlantic Ocean, visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, go see the infamous penguins at Boulders Beach, AND visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held for over 20 years….

These are just a few of the must-see’s in Cape Town! Whatever you decided to do in Cape Town, it is the perfect romantic destination in South Africa.

Cape Winelands

The next destination for romance in South Africa I highly recommend spending a few nights in the Cape Winelands — just outside of Cape Town.

This region is technically pretty large, so you can go as far and wide as you would like. You may have heard of Stellenbosch — or you may have seen the word on that most recent bottle of South African wine.

Whether you drink wine or not, this region is beautiful. There are many places to stay for a few nights to soak in the beauty and try the local wines (if you’re interested).

Durban may not be what everyone recommends for a romantic holiday in South Africa. But it has a lot to offer!! Durban is in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. I may be biased, because siZulu language is very similar to siSwati (of Eswatini). Whenever I traveled to Durban it felt like home!

The KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa has a lot to offer and may be a region you’ve heard of. When in Durban you should: Spend an afternoon on the Golden Mile (a beachfront promenade for great swimming and a restaurant-lined boardwalk), spend an evening (or full day) on Florida Road (a long, cobblestone street lined with delicious restaurants), and eat your fill of Bunny Chow (a Durban specialty of a hallow loaf of bread filled with Indian curry).

Did you know Durban has the largest Indian immigrant community outside of India? You will notice curry is a staple in Durban. It’s such a special place!

Kruger National Park &/or Sabi Sands Nature Reserve

A trip to South Africa is not complete without a safari. It will seriously change your life. For the most romantic destinations in South Africa, I highly recommend safari in Kruger National Park and/or the Sabi Sands Nature Reserve.

Kruger National Park is one of the most well-known national parks for safaris in South Africa — and maybe all of Africa. It’s a great destination to see the Big 5 (elephants, lions, leopards, rhino, and African buffalo). This is really important because not all national parks will have the Big 5. You will probably also spot a giraffe, zebra, and maybe even a cheetah!

Kruger is an iconic option and offers budget friendly accommodation like a lodge and/or camping.

Sabi Sands Nature Reserve borders Kruger National Park and also has the Big 5 (plus more). Sabi Sands is known for more intimate game-drives and luxurious accommodation. Maybe this is what you want for a honeymoon????

Honestly, you can’t go wrong for an iconic, life-changing experience.

The Kingdom of Eswatini

My final recommendation for romantic destinations in South Africa is kind of a stretch — it’s not actually in South Africa….

It’s….. Eswatini!

The Kingdom of Eswatini is a tiny nation surrounded by South Africa (with Mozambique to it’s eastern side). Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is the place I called home for 2 years — and it’s beautiful.

Eswatini is just south of Kruger and Sabi Sands, it’s just east of Joburg, and north of Durban. SO — it’s situated perfectly to add it as a romantic destination while in South Africa.

You can read more about why you should visit Eswatini here or read about Bushfire — an annual music festival in May that may be the best festival in all of Africa!

I hope that this gave you some inspiration of why you should visit this amazing country and a few of the best romantic destinations in South Africa.

My dream is to plan more honeymoons here — so do not be afraid to reach out if you’re even remotely interested 🙂
