Create an evening of cheese and wine from around the world

If you’re looking for a way to transport yourself around the world, consider curating a cheese and wine evening — for yourself, with a friend, or a partner. Enjoying good food and good wine is a part of many cultures around the world. Take it as an opportunity to slow down, take pride in yourself, and use your creativity — your “artsy” side. Create an evening of cheese and wine from around the world!

First

Put an outfit on that makes you feel good, confident, and expressive. Especially in 2020 and 2021, many of us got used to working from home in our sweatpants. If you’re still confining at home, this is a great opportunity to feel special and and get yourself “exploring the world” from your own home.

Second

Decide what sort of experience you are looking for. Maybe you want to be transported to one country. If so, you may want to create a cheese board with wine pairings from that country. If you are simply looking for an invigorating evening, maybe you want to create a charcuterie board made up of ingredients and wines from all over the world.

You could choose to spend the evening indulging in everything French or South African, or perhaps you want to enjoy a little something from several different countries. The choice is yours! But it can be fun to put some intention into it.

If you want to read about some country-specific inspiration check out my posts on Poland, Croatia, or Eswatini/South Africa.

Third

Go shopping! You can always go to a local cheese shop in your town or city. There will be lots of cheeses and ingredients to choose from. If you are looking for something a little more affordable, consider Trader Joes or Aldi. They seriously have some of the best cheese from all around the world. I recommend selecting three different types of cheeses, a fruit or something sweet (ie. berries, dried fruit), something crunchy (like nuts or cornichon pickles), and perhaps some bread or crackers. Finally, select some wine. If you are having a couple people over, consider a couple different types of wine, so you can do taste pairings.

Fourth

Open your wine to let the air get to it. I am not a wine expert, but apparently this is an important step….

Fifth

Set the stage. Create a table setting, select your utensils and glasses, decide on your cheese board, light some candles, dim the lighting, and play some background music.

If your theme for the night is to focus on one country/culture, maybe you should play some music from that country (ie. French cafe playlist on Pandora or Spotify).

These were a couple charcuterie boards we bought from a local artist. We gifted one and kept one for ourselves. We use the green one all the time!

Sixth

Lay out your ingredients, have fun with it! It’s like an art and can be done any way you want. There’s no right or wrong, in my opinion.

Seventh

The most important — enjoy!! Take your time, enjoy each flavor, experiment with the tastes of combining cheese and fruit, cheese and wine, fruit and bread, etc.

Transport yourself to a new place just for one evening. Enjoy the day-dreaming and the discussion that comes with it.

Maybe this will lead you to plan your next trip.

Or maybe it’ll simply be a night to enjoy that gets your creative-juices flowing.
