Best weekend getaways in Minnesota

This week I thought it would be helpful to write about some best weekend getaways in Minnesota. We are planning a short minimoon after our wedding in late spring. Because we will be heading to Italy for our honeymoon (check out our plans here!), we thought we would plan a short getaway to somewhere in the Midwest. Our choice was Minnesota — because it is beautiful!

Best weekend getaways in Minnesota

These are 5 places in Minnesota that we have either been to OR we have been wanting to go.

Each of these places could be a great choice for a romantic getaway, a solo relaxation trip, or a trip with a couple good friends.

Here they are!

Best weekend getaways in Minnesota

Cuyuna Cove

Cuyuna Cove has been on our bucket list for a while! It was started by a young couple from Minnesota. Cuyuna Cove is located in Crosby, MN — a short drive from the Twin Cities. It’s a property with a series of small, quaint cabins and glamping tents. Cuyuna Cove also includes a sauna, outdoor showers, hiking/biking/skiing trails, and is a short distance from the downtown and more outdoor adventures.

I’m always drawn to lake views and hearing waves on the shoreline. Cuyuna Cove looks out over a pond and is a short distance from a larger lake.

I’ve only heard great things! This place will be one that we visit very soon!

Bear Head Lake Camping in Ely, MN

Best weekend getaways in Minnesota

Ely is up pretty far north in MN. For a lot of people this could mean a longer drive. Bear Head Lake is a great spot to camp up in Ely.

We went camping here during COVID (when sleeping outside was a great way to do something fun safely). It was one of our favorite camping destinations.

We set up our tent in a somewhat private camping site, surrounded by tall tall trees, and a 5 minute walk from a beautiful, calm, serene lake.

My favorite part of this trip was hearing the loons late at night and early in the morning. For those that don’t know, the loon is Minnesota’s state bird. I grew up in the Midwest, but loons weren’t too common. Well, they are in Minnesota. And I just find the noises they make so beautiful!

Each morning, we made our campfire coffee, took it to sit by the lake, listen to the loons, and slowly wake up for the day.

I definitely recommend it as a great weekend getaway in Minnesota!

Hewing Hotel, Minneapolis

This may be a different “getaway” than the other 4. But the Hewing Hotel is a popular destination if you want to splurge with a bit of weekend comfort, rooftop views, and/or a rooftop spa and sauna.

This is on our list to visit at some point for a quick weekend getaway. They’re known for their rooftop bar, sauna, and spa.

While I do love nature this sounds like a pretty amazing way to spend a weekend!

Agua Norte Cabin

A couple years ago we stayed at this Airbnb (Agua Norte Cabin) in Grand Marais, MN. For those outside of the Midwest that may not know this, Grand Marais is a popular destination! It’s a little town right on Lake Superior. The drive along Lake Superior to get here is one of the most beautiful drives that exists!

It’s one of our favorite places we have EVER stayed! This is not an exaggeration!

And so — we would love to go back and recommend it for anyone wanting to getaway for a weekend in Minnesota!

The small cabin has a large deck overlooking Lake Superior in the distance. We sat out here and saw deer and eagles early in the morning. It has a loft and a pull out sofa if you want to bring a few adults or a family. The bathroom is super cozy with slate tile all around.

What’s even better: the Airbnb has a sauna that you can use! We used this multiple times.

Like you can read in some of my other posts (unique reasons to visit Michigan) I do love saunas!

Agua Norte Cabin is a bit of a splurge, but it has some of the best reviews I’ve ever seen on Airbnb: 4.98 stars with over 430 reviews…. This is unheard of — at least from my experience and research.

Superior Hideaway Tiny Home

This Airbnb, Superior Hideaway Tiny Home, is located in Two Harbors, MN. Two Harbors is also a small town on Lake Superior. Like I said above, this drive is sooo beautiful.

We love tiny houses! So It’s always fun to be able to stay in an official “tiny house.” This one is situated with an amazing view and has a sauna nearby. Not to mention, the reviews are also amazing!

We’ve had our eye on this getaway for a while. I’m just waiting for the perfect moment to spend this amount of money — I think most can relate….

Just imagine, getting away from the hustle and bustle of your city to sit in the quiet above Lake Superior. You can go for long walks, beautiful drives, and then take a sauna after a long day exploring!

Whether you live in Minnesota, the Midwest, or much further away, a weekend getaway to Minnesota could be magical! I highly recommend taking a weekend (or a week) to visit some of these beautiful places!
